Because the bible says a dark, watery earth existed before the rest of the universe was created, including our sun, and that trees grew on earth before the sun was created.
Human beings (homo sapiens), mere babes in the woods, began to appear around 300,000 years ago.
Birds, which the bible claims were created along with sea life, but in reality are the descendants of ancient dinosaurs, many of which had feathers and some of which flew.
